Everyone in June Buehner's family "was jumping for joy" when they found out that a local ice cream chain will open in Brandon next spring.

"I have been going to B&G Milkyway ever since I was a little kid," she said. "Every time we go into town, we stop there."

The Sioux Falls favorite is building a franchise opportunity on Robin Drive, just behind the Dollar General store. It will join five other B&G Milkyway locations – four in Sioux Falls and one in Tea.

B&G is a throwback concept, with walk-up and drive-through windows and no inside seating. Several locations have picnic tables outside, and the Brandon location probably will also, Bettmeng said. The stores are open from March to October and are closed in the winter.

The menu includes a variety of ice cream and grill items. B&G Milkyway is best known for its strawberry ice cream, footlongs and sloppy joes, which are made from a homemade recipe.

Bruce Bettmeng owns the original B&G Milkyway on West 12th Street as well as one on West 41st Street in Sioux Falls. Franchisees own the other locations. Bettmeng is looking for a franchisee for the Brandon Milkyway.

He has been looking for a site in Brandon for 10 years, Bettmeng said, but it wasn't until the current lot came available from Mike Schultz that he felt the time was right.

"My patience paid off, you could say," Bettmeng said.

"It's real risky," he said of building before a franchisee is in place. But he is in talks with several people and said B&G will open in the spring, probably in March. If a franchisee isn't in place by then, "I'll open it myself, but then it would be mid-May," he said.

Last week, workers poured a concrete floor on the 1,250 square-foot site. Reynolds Construction Management of Sioux Falls is the general contractor, according to documents filed with the Brandon planning office.

Bettmeng said the store will employ 15 to 18 part-time people, and he wants them, and the franchisee, to be Brandon people.
